Family Holiday Ideas
Throughout the years Nottingham and Sherwood Forest have both proved to be popular options for UK family holidays. The legend of Robin Hood is an enduring icon to children of all ages and the beautiful landscapes of the county combined with the historic city centre are appealing to parents too.
What I’m looking to do is to highlight below some of the strengths and lesser known highlights of taking a UK family holiday in Nottingham and Sherwood Forest. Our visitnotts.com will also direct you to other relevant sections for family holidays.
Family holidays in Nottingham and Sherwood Forest
Families particularly enjoy the area of Sherwood Forest as the attractions and activities make it a perfect holiday destination, whilst Nottingham is a great option for a short break or weekend away.
With Nottingham Castle, an alfresco café culture and fantastic shopping, the city centre gracefully combines historic heritage and contemporary design. Our city is the home of Sir Paul Smith, Nottingham Forest and Trent Bridge making it a unique UK holiday experience. With so much to do, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained in our compact and friendly city.
Holidaymakers flock to Sherwood Forest at all times of the year to relax among the tranquil scenery that can be found among its country parks, nature reserves and woodland. At Sherwood Pines you’ll find the popular holiday resort of Center Parcs and excellent activities within the forest park including adventure sports and childrens play areas.
The Major Oak is a Mecca for families wanting to discover Robin Hood’s hideout and the National Trust property of Clumber Park offers 3,800 acres of spectacular scenery which can easily be navigated by bike.

Family short break accommodation
In Nottingham you’re spoilt for choice of accommodation options with a whole host of hotels offering family rooms and taking great care to ensure that those little extras which make all the difference are available (high chairs, activity packs, buggy storage, baby changing and more).
Furthermore, many of the bed and breakfasts pride themselves on their personalised service and are able to offer secluded locations with great value rates on suites and adjoining rooms. Again all those little extras are likely to be available to make your stay much easier.
A common UK family holiday experience is self catering accommodation because it gives the flexibility that’s needed around young children in particular. We have a dedicated page with a small selection of images based around holiday cottages in Nottingham which also includes venues near Sherwood Forest.
